Getting here: From Bologna, drive along the main road S.S. 64 (named 'Porrettana'); before Vergato, turn right and follow the directions for Calvenzano.
Calvenzano is 6km from Vergato.
In the past Calvenzano has been particularly important for its ecclesiastical institutions.
Here there was a church dedicated to Sant'Apollinare, which might indicate a link with Ravenna, at the time when this village was on the border between the Byzantine Exarchate and the area occupied by the Longobards. In the XVIII century the church was completely restored, but there are still a few details of the original building, such as the two interesting single lancet windows of the facade. Remains of the original XIII century tower, which has been lowered down, are still visible on the left side of the facade. The church preserves valuable paintings, particularly the 'Madonna con i Santi Apollinare ed Andrea' which is ascribed to Dionisio Calvaert and the 'Crocefisso con le Marie piangenti' painted by a follower of Guido Reni.
Around Calvenzano there are several interesting historical buildings: Casalino, with its XVI century tower with rifle-racks all around it; the XVII century oratory of the 'Madonna del Bosco', which might have been a place where travellers and pilgrims used to stop; the tower of Sanguineta, which was probably a stronghold in the XII century, but today shows the typical features of a XV century house (especially the roof, the pigeon-house and the fired-brick doorway). -
