“LabORantes” is a name that means “those who work and who pray”. The museum is a permanent display of sacred art, popular religion objects and work tools from the mountains.
The museum focuses on two main strands of the life of local communities: sacred art and objects related to popular religion, tools and objects from everyday life.
A room of the museum is dedicated exclusively to ex-votos from the sanctuaries of the “Beata Vergine del Faggio” and of the “Madonna del Ponte” in Porretta Terme; they include paintings and objects made with different kinds of materials and techniques. Another display focuses on items and garments used during religious celebrations, dating from the XVIII to the XX century, in particular, objects dealing with the main local feasts as well as Christmas and Easter. The museum display has been designed in harmony with the craftsmanship of local communities, with materials such as wood, iron and glass; while respectful for traditions, the displays are also artistic.
The second section of the museum documents various aspects of people’s everyday life in the mountains, such as food and kitchen tools (with the reconstruction of a traditional kitchen), the use of chestnuts, local examples of craftsmanship, ancient lightening systems, clothes and various other aspects. All these documents show how people here got by for several centuries, in an often hostile natural environment.
