The ancient church-oratory of San Matteo in Savigno was built in 1683 and it’s a typical example of Bolognese oratory of the second half of the XVII century. It has been restored in recent years. Opposite the church there is a square which hosts a sandstone obelisk designed and sculpted by Tullio Golfarelli to commemorate the uprisings that took place on August the 15th 1843; the monument bears an inscription by Enrico Panzacchi celebrating the patriots that fought here ("Quei Patrioti eroicamente combattenti in Savigno per la libertà d'Italia nell'agosto dell'anno 1843..."). Savigno’s Carbonari uprising, which took place on August the 15th 1843, is famous for its “Giovane Italia” patriots that rebelled against the Papal State. The repressions was harsh: 116 citizens were trialled and 19 were give death sentences.
