The parish of San Mamante is quite ancient and the earliest written documents about it date back to the Lombard Kingdom.
From the XV century till the second half of the XVII century the church was modified various times; the current building was redone between 1911 and 1935. There are very few remains of the previous building, some of which are housed in the oratory of Pozzo. The church has a nave on each side of the main aisle, supported by high columns with capitals. The church houses a collection of books about the history of the parish of the village; here visitors can find information about the ancient building. The name of the church might have been assigned during Byzantine times; indeed, in that period various churches around Ravenna and Bologna were named after Saint Mamante. The saint is celebrated on August the 17th and he was a young shepherd that lived in the woods of Cappadocia during the III century; during Aureliano’s reign Mamante was persecuted and tortured but due to his familiarity with lions and ferocious beasts he survived, hence the iconography with two tamed lions at his feet.
