This is Porretta’s main church; it is a wide Neoclassical building overlooking the town.
As its position suggests, the church lies on the ruins of a fortress. The church is made of stone, the plan has a Latin cross and one aisle; it was built between 1600 and 1690 by the Bolognese architects Giuseppe Antonio Torri and Giuseppe Borelli. The façade features a cusp and is quite simple. The style of the building is a mixture of Baroque elements and Neoclassical style, which was added later. The interior features a christening font made in 1618 and a holy water stoup made in 1642; both are made of marble. Other precious artefacts include: a wooden crucifix made in 1630 by Fra Innocenzo da Petralia Soprana (on the third altar to the right), a painting of St Anna and Mary as a child by the XIX century painter Alessandro Guadassoni from Bologna, the altarpiece by Dionigio Calvaert (Guido Reni’s master) depicting ‘Noli me tangere’, a XVII century painting by Pier Maria Porrettano depicting Sant'Antonio Abate and a Madonna with saints possibly ascribed to Tiarini. The bell tower was built in 1810. Worth of mention is the beautiful oratory of the Confraternita del Santissimo, which lies just next to the church.
