The parish of Tavernola is named after San Giovanni Battista and is very old; first mentioned in 1378, in 1530 it was known to be property of the Olivetani monks in Monghidoro.
The church used to house a precious Madonna with child ascribed to Lippo di Dalmasio, one of the most important XIV century Bolognese artists and a pupil of Lorenzo Monaco; the artist Giorgio Morandi came here to observe it carefully but nowadays the painting is in the collection of the Pinacoteca Nazionale in Bologna. The church also houses a canvas by Bartolomeo Morelli, also known as Pianoro, depicting the christening of Christ.
