The church of Santa Maria Assunta was design by Alvar Aalto.
A visit to this church is highly recommended, since it is one of the most important examples of contemporary architecture in the Emilia Romagna region. It was completed in 1978 and designed by Alvar Aalto, the creator of modern Finnish design and architecture and one of the most important architects of the XX century. The church is an interpretation of the harmony between nature and architecture; it was commissioned in 1965 by the Bolognese cardinal Giacomo Lercaro, in line with the innovation launched by the Concilio Vaticano II, which was not in favour of monumental architecture. The building exemplifies well these ideas with its external structure made with stone from Montovolo and with the natural light coming from above in the interior. -
