Getting here: About 2km outside Porretta, driving toward Bologna (on the right side, along the main road SS64 Porrettana). It can also be reached on foot from Silla railway station; near the forge there is also a bus stop.
The earliest iron forges of the area started to operate between 1820 and 1830. These workshops produced semi-finished items with metal from foundries or with iron scraps; iron was forged with a particular type of forge hammer called ‘distendino’ and these workshops also produced agricultural tools, such as ploughshares and axles. Cà d'Alessio’s iron forge is one of the best examples of industrial archaeology of the area. It still houses all the original machinery and tools, including the forge, the forge hammer and the presses. What makes this forge unique is that it used to operate with energy produced by a water mill; moreover, all the machinery is perfectly preserved and is still working today. This forge is an important part of the ‘Museo Aperto della Montagna Bolognese’ (open museum of the Bolognese mountains); indeed, the open museum includes various areas, amongst which industrial archaeology, and operates also as a didactic resources as well as a display of artefacts. -
