  • Cattanei Tower - Villa Stagni

(castles, towers, bell towers a Crespellano)

Via Puglie Pragatto di Crespellano BO

The Cattanei tower is now known as Villa Stagni; it lies on the first hill of Pragatto. There is evidence of the original building’s features, which still existed in the XVIII century, in two drawings by Oretti; he described it as an ancient fortress with a tower with battlements surrounded by a moat with water. The castle was built in 1474 by Eliseo Cattanei; this is testified by a memorial stone embedded in the façade. The building was largely modified in the middle of the XIX century; the main part of the castle was demolished and rebuilt with a magnificent inner court with a characteristic well.
The tower is ideally safeguarding Crespellano, although the town already has another tower, named after the Bentivoglio.
