This is the main square of Porretta Terme and has always represented the heart of the social life of the town. Since the XIX century it has not substantially changed, and the same goes for the pretty buildings that surround it. Only the cobble stone pavement has disappeared.
The oldest name of the square is “Piazza degli Arrighi”, a name that reminds us of the assemblies held during the time of Medieval municipalities, when it was the hub of the social life of the county founded by Niccolò V in 1447. Then it took on the name “Piazza Maggiore” until the unification of Italy; after this event, it was named after the king Vittorio Emanuele II. The current name dates back to the end of World war II after the fall of the monarchy. In the XIX century the square flourished with businesses such as the elegant “Caffè del Commercio”, the bank “Cassa di Risparmio di Porretta”, the town hall and the XVIII century theatre. The upper part of the square was enclosed by the arch of the clock, leading to the “bridge of sights” (sadly, today the arch is gone and the municipal clock has been transferred to the bell tower of the church of S. Maria Maddalena). From here, a series of narrow lanes with arches led to the spa (Terme) and to the church. Since the XVI century the square hosts the Saturday market, a tradition that has continued over the centuries. -
