  Getting here: From the main road Strada Porrettana , 2km after Marzabotto if driving from Bologna, turn left for Sperticano and San Martino and drive up the hill for 4km.
  
  
  The park was established in 1989 and covers an area of 2,539 hectares, plus an additional 3,700, on the hills and mountains of the Bolognese Apennine, between the rivers Setta and Reno; it spreads over the territory of the municipalities of Marzabotto, Monzuno and Grizzana Morandi. The height spans from 101 to 826 mt above sea level.
  Between the river Reno and the brook Setta there is a series of hills and mountains located just north of Grizzana Morandi, the town where the painter Giorgio Morandi used to retreat. These mountains are called Pezza, Salvaro, Termine and Sole; during the last war there were harsh battles here. Indeed, Marzabotto, the town at the centre of the park, is sadly renown for the nazi-fascist slaughter that killed 770 local civilians in the Autumn of 1944. Today peace has returned over these mountains, after a very long time, thanks to the recent recovery of local history and the constant cult of memory, as a way to celebrate peace.
  New trees have covered old pastures and lands that used to be farmed; recent studies maintain that more than nine hundred diverse species of plants constitute the great bio-diversity of these woods, which are also enriched by the diversity of habitats. The Mount Termine features pines, perhaps the heritage of a colder climate in the past. The re-naturalisation of the environment and the presence of two rivers also contribute to the wide variety of the fauna; in particular, worth of mention is the presence of deer and predator birds. The visit to the School of Peace and to the memorial start in Poggiolo; the itinerary includes the places and the villages that have been involved in the slaughter, small villages with Medieval buildings and churches.
