The park was established in 1995 and covers an area of around 2,100 hectares plus and additional 1,200. It is located in the central part of the high Bolognese Apennine, in the municipalities of Camugnano and Castel di Casio; the height spans from 468 to 1,273mt above sea level.
The park is in the central area of the Bolognese Apennine and develops around two wide artificial lakes that were built in the early XX century with hydroelectric purposes. The mountains Calvi (1,283mt above sea level) and Stagno separate the valleys of the streams Brasimone and Limentra di Treppio, the two main tributaries of the lakes. The west side of the mountains and the valley of the Brasimone are covered by woods of oak, beech and conifers, creating the spectacular front of “Cinghi delle Mogne”. The lower hills feature wide meadows that used to be pastures and old plantations that have been covered by spontaneous vegetation. Around Mogne and Porranceto there are beautiful forests of chestnut trees; here the park features a museum in the woods. The park’s flora includes rare plants such as Fritillaria tenella and White Mountain saxifrage, which live on rocks, columbines, gentians and orchids. Over the past years, a less intense human presence has favoured the proliferation of the fauna, which features wild animals of which the most important is deer; between September and October this is the area in which the deer’s bell is more likely to be heard in the whole Apennine. The area features a rich medieval heritage, such as Bargi, Baigno, Badi, Stagno and particularly the village of Chiapporato, which is now abandoned, overlooked by the mountain Calvi and with beautiful stone houses. The hydroelectric plant of Suviana is very interesting from the technological point of view; here there is a visitors’ centre dedicated to water and in Brasimone there is an Enea information centre. The lakes are very popular with tourists thanks to the various facilities, tracks, itineraries, canoeing and windsurfing. -
