Getting here: Easy to reach from Modena and Bologna; drive along the main road Statale Bazzanese (SS569) till Loc. Muffa and then follow the signs for Monteveglio.
The park was established in 1995 and covers an area of around 900 hectares around the town of Monteveglio, in the valley of the Samoggia river, in the province of Bologna. The park is located at a height that spans from 90 to 324mt above sea level.
The park is the safeguard of the most important area of the valley of the Samoggia river, including the hill with the ruins of the medieval castle and the abbey of Santa Maria di Monteveglio, with its 1,000 years old parish. The typical local landscape features woods, small valleys and badlands, as well as meadows and farmers’ fields, including vineyards and cherry trees. The area has a rich past, which offers opportunities for interesting itineraries, and ancient villages, some of which once belonged to local monasteries. The area has flora and fauna typical of the hills as well as interesting geological and environmental aspects in relation to badlands, such as in the valley of Rio Ramato, in the small lake of Pan Perso or in the valley of Rio Paraviere. The flora includes snowdrops, liverwort and dog's tooth violet; rare orchids grow in the woods amongst oak trees and the meadows. The XIV century tower of the castle hosts a visitors’ centre about the complex historical events of Monteveglio, which was quite important especially in the middle ages. The castle was located in the lands owned by Matilde di Canossa and is famous for the resistance during the siege of the emperor Henry IV. The visitors’ centre is housed in the main building of the ancient village of San Teodoro, just outside the modern town of Monteveglio; around the centre there is a natural itinerary which is accessible to blind and disabled visitors. The park has been running an intense and innovative environmental education programme for schools for several years. The whole area is renown for traditional local wines and gastronomy; the headquarters of the “Consorzio Vini dei Colli Bolognesi” (wine producers association of the Bolognese hills) are here. -
