Camugnano

  • Camugnano Camugnano is located in the valley of the river Limentra di Treppio; it lies between the lake of Suviana and the point where the Limentra flows into the river Reno. The town has Roman origins and its name is a toponym. During the Roman Empire, a nobleman called Camonius had a property on these lands which was named 'fundus Camonianus'; the town was then known as Camugliano and Ca Mugliano, until it became Camugnano. In the ancient past, the town is known to have sheltered dangerous political exiles that were threatening Bologna; during the middle of the XV century, Bologna destroyed Camugnano's castle in reprisal. Today Camugnano is a quiet town and an ideal holiday resort for older people and families with children, thanks to the nice weather and its relaxing green surroundings. There are several facilities for children?s entertainment and for sporting activities (such as skating and basketball). Recommended for those who want to explore natural beauty are a walk on the nearby mountain of Monte Vigese (1126m) or a visit to Bargi, where there is an ancient tradition of arms fabrication, especially arquebuses. The village, Borghetto di Chiopporato, is not inhabited anymore, but is worth a visit and can only be reached on foot. The territory of Camugnano also includes the two artificial lakes, Brasimone and Suviana. The lake of Suviana is located between the municipalities of Camugnano and Castel di Casio, and has facilities for water sports, such as wind surfing and rowing; canoes, pedalos and deck chairs can be hired on the spot.
