Castiglione dei Pepoli

  • Castiglione dei Pepoli Castiglione dei Pepoli is located at the foot of the Monte Gatta (1158m). Its territory includes the village of Baragazza, where there is the famous sanctuary of the 'Madonna di Bocca di Rio'. A legend says that in these woods on July the 16th 1480, two shepherds had a vision of the Virgin and were told to build a temple which then became a sanctuary attracting pilgrims from all over Italy. A few kilometres from Castiglione dei Pepoli lies the beautiful artificial lake of Brasimone. It was created in 1911 by a 32 metre high dam. The lake is about 800m in length and 600m in width; fishing and water sports are frequently enjoyed on its shores. Closeby the lake there is also a small museum on the themes of energy and the environment which was opened by Enea and Enel.
