Monghidoro
-
Monghidoro is in the south-eastern part of the Bolognese Apennines. In the past, the town was popularly known as 'Scaricalasino' (literally 'the unloading of the donkey'), because here there were papal customs barriers and all goods had to be unloaded for clearance before crossing the border into Tuscany. The territory is rich in natural and historical beauty. In the small village of Campeggio there is a sanctuary dedicated to the Madonna of the Woods (Santuario della Madonna dei Boschi), founded in 1680, hosting a famous icon of the Madonna of San Luca which is brought to the main parish church every year to be venerated during the rogations. In nearby Vergiano, another small village which preserves some XVI century houses and buildings, there is an ancient church dedicated to San Alessandro.
