The village of Barbarolo is part of the municipality of Loiano and is located in the western part of its territory, where the mountains are about 500mt high. Originally built as a stronghold, in ancient times this small village was independent on matters of administration, and its parish church was already mentioned as an important parish in a 1034 document; it is probably certain that this area was part of Matilde di Canossa's lands.
The area has very old churches and buildings. The church dedicated to the Saints Pietro and Paolo has been rebuilt during the XX century on the foundations of a VII - VIII century early Romanesque church. The old oratory dedicated to San Cristoforo has a plaque which celebrates restoration works carried out more than five centuries ago (1467); every year, the holy image of the Madonna of San Luca starts from here its one-week long religious procession which travels through the surrounding villages of Barbarolo, La Guarda, Scascoli, Anconella and Sabbioni, till it comes back on the Assumption Day. Not far from here, there is a tiny village named Trebbo, where it is possible to spot some XV century traditional buildings. -
