Getting here: From Bologna (52km far) follow the main road S.S. 64 (Porrettana); once in Vergato turn right for Cereglio on the S.P. 25. The closest toll gate is the one in Sasso Marconi at 25km.
Castel d'Aiano is located on the hills and is a nice holiday resort.
The area has many interesting places to visit: such as the sanctuaries of the 'Madonna di Brasa' and the one of 'Malandrone', or places of naturalistic interest such as the so called 'Orrido di Gea', the 'Tana dell'uomo selvatico', the 'Sassomolare' and the caves of Labante.
Near Castel d'Aiano there is a small historical village called Rocca di Roffeno; unfortunately it has been largely destroyed during World War II (in 1943-45; there are still traces of the 'Linea Gotica') and reconstructed, but it is still possible to see the abbey, dedicated to Santa Lucia, the parish church of Roffeno, and the Jussi tower. Worth of mention is the bell tower, in the typical Bolognese style.
The area has several typical products. The hills between Castel D'Aiano and Savigno are famous for the precious white truffle named Tuber Magnatum Pico, which grows exclusively in the Italian Apennines; the truffle is a very important business for this area.
Local potatoes are also another high quality product of the area; the area has been awarded the D.O.C. quality trade mark and a traditional folk celebration of the local potato enlivens the town every year. This area has been also assigned the D.O.C. quality trade mark for the production of the cheese Parmigiano Reggiano. -
