The church was rebuilt on the ruins of a previous building which perhaps dated back to 950. It has a portico with three arches, built in the XVII and XVIII century, and an imposing bell tower. From 1378 to the XV century it was part of the bishop’s see; then it became part of the parish of San Mamante, until it achieved independent status in 1586. The church houses a crucifix and an important altarpiece (end of the XVI century) depicting San Nicolò, Giacomo and Lorenzo, contemplating the holy trinity; this very harmonious painting was made by the Bolognese Pietro Faccini, Annibale Carracci’s pupil. The carved black wood crucifix is ascribed to Andrea Brustolon (1662-1732) from Veneto, or perhaps to his school; it was carefully crafted with various pieces of cypress wood and almost looks seamless. The original cross was so deteriorated that it was substituted with a walnut wood one about a century ago.
