The XVIII century church of S. Apollinare is located near Castelletto in a unique setting surrounded by ravines. The church houses art works by Passuti, Varotti, Sansone, Luigi Samoggia and Bartolomeo Passarotti. The imposing typical local architecture lies on the ruins of an older parish documented as early as in the IX century. The name of this church reminds us of the famous Byzantine church in Ravenna; the solitary setting with ravines and hills would be ideal for a Romanic abbey. The history of the church of S. Apollinare is tied with that of the Lateran monks in Monteveglio, in charge of a number of churches in the area. The church was restored in the XVII century and then again the following century by Ambrosi. The building has a delicate façade and a Latin cross plan; the bell tower is inserted in the middle of the church, on the left side, and has a classical style with a steeple on the top. The apse is octagonal. The interior has several art works, amongst which a painting by Samoggia (in the chapel of the Assunta, the first on the right), a canvas depicting the Assunta by Ercole Graziani, the glory of angels painted by Samoggia (in the second altar in the right) and some frescos in the apse. -
